Useful Tips
Safety - by Bobby from Cardiff
Take good care when going out at night, it is not safe after dark. Drive slowly; kids, dogs, chickens and bicycles have right of way, so be careful. Get a good map, a four wheel drive and then you will enjoy this vibrant country.
Other - by George from Amsterdam
Driving here is in my opinion the only way to see Belize. It is a small stunning little place, with much to see and explore. If you plan on going off the beaten track, hiring a four wheel drive is your best choice.
Safety - by Bobby from Spain
Driving here can be a bit hair raising as there are kids, dogs and bicycles all over and they do not understand that if a car hits them, it will hurt. They have all the rights, I almost hit a dog on my first day and then the following day a cyclist darted in front of me. So drive slowly and keep your eyes peeled at all times.

Belize Overview
To the Northeast of Central America and tucked in between Mexico’s Yucatan and Guatemala’s Peten forests, lies BELIZE, a country of breathtaking scenic beauty, with tropical forests, rugged mountains and beneath the sparkling ocean surface, the longest barrier reef of the America’s. This quiet, little Caribbean destination offers the visitor a wealth of national parks and reserves, dramatic Mayan ruins of ancient cities in the rainforest, and marvellous diving in crystal waters.

Belize Essentials
Wildlife - Belize’s dense tropical forests are home to a vast variety of wildlife, from such exotic creatures as jaguars, pumas, tapirs, and excitable howler monkeys, with Jabiru storks, toucans and scarlet macaws some of the better known bird species.

The Cayes - A chain of islands, known as cayes, lie scattered along the reef with warm, temperate waters that are only about 5m deep and so clear that visibility underwater can be up to 60m making them a snorkelling and diving paradise.

Lamanai - This ancient Mayan site appears to have been occupied as early as 1500 BC, partly excavated, it has revealed 60 structures that include a splendid 34m high late pre-classic edifice.

Xuantuich - The ruins of Xumanti (Stone Maiden) can be found on a hilltop close to the Guatamalan border, and rise 40m above the jungle, from where it controlled the area leading from the hinterlands to the coast.

Belize City - Belize City is a hot, busy, somewhat ramshackle, but very colourful Caribbean city that has been around forever, surviving tropical storms that destroyed it often in the 19th and early 20th century and is the transport centre of the country.

Belize Calendar - Pick of the Year's Events
Lobster Festival - (June) A celebration of the start of lobster season on the island Caye Caulker.

Deer Dance Festival – (August) A unique mixture of ancient Mayan and Christian culture celebrated in San Antonio in southern Belize.
